Тонкий метафизический детектив, одно из самых загадочных произведений Владимира Набокова. Кроме повести «Соглядатай» в книгу вошли рассказы «Обида», «Лебеда», «Terra Incognita», «Встреча», «Хват», «Занятой человек», «Музыка», «Пильграм», «Совершенство», «Случай из жизни», «Красавица» и «Оповещение». Главный герой, не выдержав унижения, совершает самоубийство и становится призраком, способным лишь наблюдать за происходящим вокруг. Прежде всего, его внимание привлекает таинственная фигура Смурова, истинную личность которого читатели узнают практически в самом конце повести. Это наполненное метафорами и отсылками к русской литературе произведение было написано в Берлине и впервые опубликовано в журнале «Современные записки» в 1930 году. Книжная публикация, однако, состоялась лишь в 1938 году. Набоков планировал включить в это издание двадцать один рассказ, тематически и стилистически связанный с повестью. Однако издатель уверил писателя, что формат такой книги (350 страниц) окупить будет невозможно. В итоге было оставлено тринадцать рассказов, присутствующие и в данной книге ровно в том порядке, в котором их расположил автор.
