'The Arab of the Future' is a series of autobiographical comics by French artist and director Riad Sattouf about his childhood, which he spent in Libya, Syria, and France.
The second volume covers six-year-old Riad's first year of schooling in Syria. He learns to read and write Arabic, meets new relatives, and tries to become a true Syrian to please his father. The monotony of rural life and the harsh school routine in Ter Maaleh, illegal shopping in Homs, awkward dinners at the home of a megalomaniac general, a grueling journey through ancient Palmyra—Riadh invites you to immerse yourself in the surreal everyday life of the Sattouf family in the country of dictator Hafez al-Assad.
The 'Arab of the Future' series has been translated into more than 20 languages and has won the Grand Prix of the RTL Literary Prize, the Los Angeles Times Books Prize, the Prix BD Stas / Ville de Saint-Étienne, and the main prize of the Angoulême International Comics Festival.
