Emmanuel Guibert is one of the most respected French comics artists, winner of the Grand Prix at the Angoulême International Comics Festival and the René Goscinny Prize for screenwriting. At the age of thirty, Emmanuel met sixty-nine-year-old Alan Ingram Cope, an American soldier who had served in World War II. A strong friendship developed between them, and over the next twelve years, Emmanuel recorded Alain's stories about his everyday life at war, which took place far from the battlefield, absurd incidents at the front that put soldiers' lives at risk, and meetings with a variety of people who played an important role in his fate.
The graphic novel 'Alain's War' is not a chronicle of military events, but a story about the formation of a personality and the inner struggle of an ordinary person, through which a picture of life in Europe and America in the 20th century can be seen.
