'On Walking on Ice' is a poetic and contemplative travel diary by a German director who set out on a walking trip from Munich to Paris in November 1974. Herzog was convinced that if he reached Paris on time, the gravely ill Lotte Eisner, a film criticism legend he admired, would survive. 'On Walking on Ice' is a documentation of this ritualistic journey that can be read in several ways: as a penetrating reflection on life and death, as meditative sketches of a vanishing European landscape, as a stream of consciousness stirred by the walk, and as a film in prose, reminding us that only on the road do we find peace.

Werner Herzog Stipetić is a German film director, screenwriter, and actor who has made more than forty films, mostly documentaries, staged numerous operas, and published dozens of books. Some film critics conventionally associate him with the New German Cinema movement, alongside Fassbinder, Wenders, and Schlöndorff, an assessment with which Herzog himself disagrees.
