In 1995, Joe Sacco traveled to the Balkans to collect eyewitness accounts of the Bosnian War. He was one of the first journalists to enter the Muslim enclave of Goražde, besieged by Bosnian Serbs, and conducted dozens of interviews with trapped residents, without access to the outside world, electricity, or running water. Their tragic stories serve as the best evidence of what happens when politics is put above human lives.
'Goražde: Safe Zone' is Sacco's magnum opus, which established him as one of America's most renowned journalists. In 2001, the book won the Will Eisner Award and was nominated for a Harvey Award. In addition, Time magazine named Gorazde the best comic of 2000, and The New York Times included it in its list of the best books of 2001.
