Life and career

John Green grew up in Orlando, Florida, and later attended the boarding school Indian Springs School outside Birmingham, Alabama. In 2000, Green graduated from Kenyon College, where he earned degrees in English literature and religion.

After graduating, Green spent five months in a children's hospital working there as a chaplain, and during that time he enrolled in the University of Chicago Divinity School, which he did not complete. His experience working with children suffering from incurable diseases inspired John to write The Fault in Our Stars.

Green lived for several months in Chicago, where he worked at Booklist magazine as an editorial assistant and editor. During this time, John wrote Looking for Alaska. He wrote hundreds of reviews of books, mostly novels and books about Islam and Siamese twins. He also reviewed books for The New York Times Book Review and wrote for Chicago radio station WBEZ, as well as for National Public Radio. John lived in New York for two years while his wife was finishing high school.
