Anna Starobinets
Anna Starobinets is a writer and screenwriter. She is one of the few Russian-language authors working in the style of horror fiction. She writes science fiction and thrillers for adults, as well as fairy-tale and detective stories for children; her only nonfiction book is autobiographical: Look at Him.
She was born in Moscow, studied at an Oriental studies lyceum, and later at Moscow State University in the Faculty of Philology. Throughout her life, she has been engaged in a variety of work, from simultaneous interpreting and private English tutoring to posting advertisements and even waitressing. After graduating from Moscow State University, she got a job at the newspaper Vremya Novostei. Since then, she has worked in journalism. At different times, she worked for the following publications: Vremya Novostei, Gazeta.ru, Arguments and Facts, Expert, and Gudok. She worked both as a journalist and as an editor in the culture department. At present, she works for the magazine Russian Reporter. In addition, she writes scripts for film and television.
Together with Vadim Sokolovsky, Anna Starobinets worked on the screenplay for the domestic fantasy film Book of Masters (2009). She is the widow of writer Alexander Garros. She is raising two children and a poodle named Kokos.
Starobinets’s books have been translated into English, French, and Spanish. The author’s works have repeatedly been included on the lists of nominees for international literary awards in the field of science fiction.
