Jim Butcher is an American writer working in the genres of horror, thriller, science fiction, and mysticism.

He was born on October 26, 1971, in Independence, Missouri. After finishing school, he entered the University of Oklahoma, where he initially began studying engineering, but eventually, after changing several majors, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. Even in his first year, Butcher married his high school sweetheart Shannon (they now have a son named James Joseph). The need to support himself and his family while studying forced Butcher to take a number of jobs, from yogurt salesman to door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman.

Butcher’s interest in science fiction was sparked by his older sisters, two in number, who gave the schoolboy Tolkien’s trilogy The Lord of the Rings and the collection The Adventures of Han Solo from the Star Wars series.

“I remember being upset that I couldn’t find the ‘perfect story’ — well, you know what I mean,” Butcher says. “Such a story is completely true, makes you laugh and cry, and when all the pages have been read, leaves you with a sense of satisfaction. Of course, I understand that each of us has our own ‘perfect story,’ but my attempts to find mine led me to write my first novel when I was nineteen. It was not perfect. In fact, it was awful. But, not giving up, I enrolled in writing courses at university and tried to turn my second novel into the ‘perfect story.’ It didn’t work again. In fact, it was even worse. Then came the third. The fourth, at least, turned out a little better, but still not good enough, far worse than the ‘perfect story.’ In my fifth novel, I think I gathered everything I had ever been taught by my instructor. The book was called The Dresden Chronicles, Book One: Semiautomagic. After several rounds of revision, it became The Dresden Files, Book One: Storm Front... And for the record: I still haven’t written my ‘perfect story.’ But maybe it will be the next novel. Or the one after it, or the one after that, or...”

Jim Butcher’s first novel launched the series about the adventures of wizard-detective Harry Dresden, who investigates all sorts of magical troubles in the world
