Boris Groys
He was born in East Berlin into the family of a Soviet technical specialist.
1965—1971: Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, Leningrad State University (Department of Mathematical Logic) 1971—1976: research fellow at research institutes in Leningrad 1976: moved to Moscow 1976—1981: research fellow at the Department of Structural and Applied Linguistics, Moscow State University concurrently participated in private seminars on unofficial art published articles on cultural studies, philosophy, and art theory in the samizdat journals Chasy and Obvodny Kanal from 1977, published in tamizdat in 1980—1981, served on the editorial board of the journal 37 December 1981: moved to the Federal Republic of Germany lived in Munich, then in Cologne one of the founders (in 1983) of the religious-philosophical journal Beseda 1982—1985: various research fellowships in Germany 1986—1987: freelance writer in Cologne Winter semester 1988: professor at the Faculty of Slavic Studies, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. January 1988 — September 1994: lecturer in the theory of Russian culture, Westphalian Wilhelm University, Germany. Winter semester 1991: professor at the Faculty of Slavic Studies and the Faculty of Art History, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA 1992: PhD in philosophy, Westphalian Wilhelm University. From October 1994: professor of philosophy, art theory, and media theory at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design[de], Germany Winter semester 1996—1997: fellowship at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies, Vienna (Fellowship des Internationalen Forschungszentrums Kulturwissenschaften (IFK), Vienna). March — April 1997: fellowship, Harvard University Art Museum, Cambridge, USA. 2010: signed an open letter to the President of Russia in defense of Andrei Erofeev and Yuri Samodurov. 201
