Denis Kryukov
Denis Andreyevich Kryukov is a Russian writer, screenwriter, journalist, independent publisher, and an important representative of Russian zine culture.
Denis Kryukov was born on February 6, 1977, in Moscow into a family of graphic artists (his father, A. A. Kryukov, was a graphic artist; his grandfather, A. D. Kryukov, was a graphic artist and, from 1959 to 1989, the artistic director of the Applied Graphics Workshop of the RSFSR Art Fund (Promgrafika); he was also the author of the logos for Melodiya and Voskhod, the sign for the October cinema, etc.).
He graduated from the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State University in 1999.
Since 1997, he has been published as a film critic («Russkiy Zhurnal», List.ru, «OM», Vogue, «Drugoye kino», «Gunfu», Ex Libris, «Gudok», «Kinoizm.ru», and others).
As an editor, he worked for such periodicals as «Kinoprotsess», Harper’s Bazaar, BLACKSQUARE, and Winzawod ArtReview.
In 2014–2015, he was editor-in-chief of the newspaper Dosug v Moskve (the official print organ of the Moscow Department of Culture). He continues to write about phenomena of contemporary cultural life for various publications.
In 2014, the short film Night Winter People was made to a screenplay by Denis Kryukov (directed by Valery Poliyenko, Cosmosfilm studio), in which he played one of the roles. The film was shown at various film festivals and received a number of awards (Best Direction, Russian Short Film Festival Koroche, 2014; Best Feature Film, Debut Film festival, 2014; Audience Award, Debut Film festival, 2014).
In 2016 and 2017, he served as curator of two projects by Moscow’s GROUND Peschanaya gallery in the field of independent book publishing: the exhibition GROUND Zine. A Book That Does Not Exist and the GROUND Zine Fest 2017 fair.
