Devid Ogilvi

David Ogilvy (English: David MacKenzie Ogilvy; 23 June 1911, England — 21 July 1999) was the founder of the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather and a successful copywriter. Many recognize David Ogilvy as the “Father of Advertising.” In 1962, Time described him as “the most famous wizard in the modern advertising industry.” He was a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1977, he was inducted into the U.S. Advertising Hall of Fame.

David Ogilvy was born in England and was the fifth child in a family from an old Scottish lineage. He did not receive a higher education, although he began studying in Edinburgh and Oxford. Without obtaining a degree, he began working. His first job was at the restaurant of the Majestic Hotel in Paris, where he initially cooked food for the guests’ dogs. He rose to the position of chef in the catering industry. He returned to England and worked as a traveling salesman selling Aga home stoves.

1936 — worked at the London advertising agency Mather & Crowther. 1938 — emigrated to America. He joined Raymond Rubicam’s agency.

Ogilvy met George Gallup and, at his invitation, worked at the Audience Research Institute (among the Institute’s recommendations was an emphasis on the love story rather than the war story in advertising the film Gone with the Wind).

Shortly before the war, Ogilvy became director of the Audience Research Institute.

1942 — mobilized into British intelligence (his immediate superior was intelligence officer William Stephenson, Intrepid / the Fearless).

During the war, Ogilvy worked as a staff member of the British Embassy in the United States (one of his tasks was preparing instructions sent to Moscow).

After the war, he spent three years farming.

1949 — returned to advertising and started his own business, the company Ogilvy & Mather.

1951 — Ogilvy’s first high-profile advertisement for Harthway (a small American shirtmaking company). The central character was a man with a black eye patch.

1953 — an advertisement for Schweppes soft drinks. The face of the advertising
