Joan Didion

Joan Didion

Joan Didion was a writer, journalist, screenwriter, and the author of five novels and twelve works of nonfiction. Among the films based on Didion’s screenplays is Panic in Needle Park (1971), a Cannes Film Festival prizewinner.

She was born in Sacramento, California, into the family of a U.S. Army officer. In childhood she moved often because of her father’s work and frequently attended school irregularly. In her own words, she grew up as a “shy swot” who loved to read. She began writing at the age of five, but believed she could become a writer only after her first publication.

In 1956 she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. In her final year she took part in an essay contest sponsored by Vogue magazine. After winning first prize, she joined the magazine’s staff.

In her works, Didion often wrote about California, especially the 1960s, and the profound changes taking place in the world around her. Her essay collections Slouching Towards Bethlehem (1968) and The White Album (1979), in which Didion served as an observer of America’s political and cultural landscape, became classics. Developing her distinctive reportage style, she combined personal experience and social analysis, which is why she is often associated with such representatives of New Journalism as Tom Wolfe and Hunter Stockton Thompson, although Didion herself never considered this connection especially close.

From 1964 to 2003, she was married to writer and screenwriter John Gregory Dunne. In 2005 she received the National Book Award in the nonfiction category for The Year of Magical Thinking, memoir about his loss and her daughter’s serious illness.

She died on December 23, 2021.
