Dzhuliya Enders
Giulia Enders was born in the city of Mannheim, in southwestern Germany, in 1990. She is a German writer and scientist. The book that brought her fame was “The Inner Story of Our Body, the Most Underrated Organ.” More than one million copies were sold in Germany, and it was published in English, French, Italian, and other translations. Enders is enrolled in a doctoral (PhD) program in gastroenterology at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. In 2012, she won first prize at Science Slam in Freiburg, Berlin, and Karlsruhe with her talk “Darm Mit Charme” (“Charming Bowels”). This talk was also published on YouTube. Enders received an offer to write a book on this topic, which became a bestseller shortly after its release in March 2014. The illustrations for the book were made by her older sister, Jill Enders. She has appeared on the German talk shows 3 nach 9 and Markus Lanz. Darm mit Charme was published in March 2014. In July 2014, the Ullstein Verlag editor announced that 500,000 copies had been sold. The rights to the book were sold in 18 countries. In her book, Giulia explains the functions and significance of the human gastrointestinal tract. She also criticizes excessive hygiene in society and its effect on the immune system (the hygiene hypothesis). She is currently working on a dissertation on Acinetobacter baumannii, which can lead to infected wounds, respiratory diseases, and blood poisoning. After that, she wanted to become a gastroenterologist.
