Ann Brashares
Ann Brashares (born July 30, 1967) is an American writer who specializes mainly in young adult fiction. She became widely known around the world for the book series The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
Brashares was born in Alexandria, Virginia, and grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Ann was raised in a close-knit family together with three brothers. Brashares attended Sidwell Friends School in Washington. After graduating from Barnard College (part of Columbia University in New York), where she studied philosophy, Brashares worked for some time as an editor at 17th Street Productions. 17th Street was acquired by the larger company Alloy Entertainment. After that, Brashares worked intermittently for Alloy as well. In 2000, Ann left the company and began work on her first book, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Published in 2001, the book instantly became an international bestseller. The continuation of the story about four loyal friends was not long in coming: over the next five years, four more books appeared, the last of which, Forever in Blue, was released in January 2007.
The first book was adapted by Warner Brothers in 2005, and in August 2008 the second film based on the remaining three books was released.
Ann's first adult novel, The Last Summer (of You and Me), was released in 2007.
In January 2009, another Brashares book was published, 3 Willows: The Sisterhood Grows. This is a spin-off of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, telling the story of the friendship of Polly, Jo, and Ama.
At present, Ann Brashares lives in New York with her husband, artist Jacob Collins, and her children: Nathaniel, Samuel, and Susannah. In the summer, the family usually vacations on Fire Island, New York.
