Eva Merkacheva

Yevgenia Mikhailovna Merkacheva is a Russian journalist, writer, and human rights activist. She graduated with honors from the Faculty of Journalism of Lomonosov Moscow State University. She has received a number of awards for journalistic and human rights work.

Member of the Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights of the Russian Federation (2018–2021).

Member of the Moscow Union of Journalists, the Union of Journalists of Russia, and the Union of Writers. Member of the Public Monitoring Commission of Moscow and of the Public Council of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia.

Author of the books Crimes and Secrets of Modern Russia, Tesak, Furgal, and Others, “Strange” Deaths, Cases, and Everyday Life in Russian Prisons, and City of the Doomed: A Frank Report on Seven Colonies for Life-Sentenced Prisoners.
