Gudman Rut

Ruth Goodman is a British independent historian specializing in the history of the Early Modern period; as a guest expert, she advises museums and organizations involved in cultural and historical heritage. She is a specialist in British social history. She has been an honorary doctor of Robert Gordon University since 2012. Together with the BBC, she has taken part in the creation of a number of documentary projects devoted to British social history. As a presenter, she has participated in the production of several episodes of the television program The One Show.

Ruth Goodman graduated from the University of Exeter. After receiving her higher education, she worked for some time as a railway ticket inspector in the mid-1980s. In the late 1980s, her husband brought her into a group of enthusiasts engaged in restoring the social and cultural traditions and crafts of the Tudor period. Goodman became a recognized specialist in this field. She began to be invited as a consulting expert to the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and the Globe Theatre in London. In 1998, she served as historical consultant on the film Shakespeare in Love. Together with the BBC, Goodman took part in the creation of a number of documentary projects devoted to British social history. The first such project was the 12-part historical reconstruction Tales from the Green Valley, which premiered on BBC Two in autumn 2005. A team consisting of the historians Stuart Peachey and Ruth Goodman and the archaeologists Alex Langlands, Peter Ginn, and Chloe Spencer reconstructed a year in the life of Tudor-period peasants on a Welsh farm from the early 17th century. During filming, they used period-accurate tools and clothing, building techniques, and food. In 2006, Goodman also took part in filming the historical film Tudor Christmas.

In 2009, she appeared in another historical reconstruction, together with Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn, Victorian Farm, which aired on the BBC from January to December 2009. The series consisted of six episodes and the film Victorian Christmas. The following year, Goodman also took part in filming the historical series Victorian Pharmacy, in which she investigated medical practices of the Victorian era, together with Nick Barber,
