Ilya Yashin

Ilya Valeryevich Yashin is a Russian opposition politician and public figure.

Yashin became known in the early 2000s as one of the leaders of the Oborona movement and a member of Youth Yabloko, thanks to his participation in rallies and protest actions. Since 2006, he has been a member of the federal bureau of the Yabloko party. On 18 December 2008, he was expelled from Yabloko for joining the leadership of the Solidarity movement, where he became a close associate of Boris Nemtsov.

Since 2010, he participated in the People’s Freedom Party movement “For Russia Without Arbitrary Rule and Corruption.” In 2011, he took part in mass protests against the falsification of the results of the State Duma elections. From 2012 to 2016, he was deputy chairman of the PARNAS party.

After the murder of Boris Nemtsov in 2015, Yashin headed the team of journalists who completed the report “Putin. War.” In February 2016, Yashin published the report “Threat to National Security,” which contained sharp criticism of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. Yashin also publicly accused Kadyrov of organizing Nemtsov’s murder.

In the 2017 municipal elections in Moscow, he was elected deputy of the Krasnoselsky municipal district. He held this position until the summer of 2021.

In 2019, the Russian authorities removed Yashin and several other independent candidates from the elections to the Moscow City Duma. In 2021, the authorities did not allow Yashin to register as a candidate in a by-election to the Moscow City Duma, accusing him of ties to “extremists” from FBK and Navalny’s штабs.
