Kaku Mitio

Michio (Micio) Kaku is an American scientist specializing in theoretical physics. He is known as an active popularizer of science and the author of popular science books.

Michio was born on January 24, 1947, in San Jose, California. His ancestors were Japanese immigrants. His grandfather came to America to take part in the operation to deal with the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Michio’s father was born in California, but was educated in Japan and spoke a little English. During World War II, both of his parents were sent to a Japanese internment camp in California, where they met and where his brother was born.

Kaku studied at Cubberley High School in Palo Alto in the early 1960s and was captain of its chess team. At the national science fair in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he attracted the attention of physicist Edward Teller, who took Kaku on as a protégé, awarding him a Hertz Foundation scholarship.

Kaku graduated with honors from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in 1968 and was first in physics in his class. He then joined the radiation laboratory in Berkeley, which is part of the University of California, where he received his Ph.D. in 1972 and began lecturing at Princeton University in 1973.

During the Vietnam War, Kaku underwent basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and infantry training at Fort Lewis, Washington. The war ended before he was sent to the front.

Marital status: married to Shizue Kaku, has two daughters. He currently lives with his family in New York.

To this day, Dr. Michio Kaku teaches at New York City College, where he has already worked for more than 25 years. Michio Kaku is an active popularizer of theoretical physics and modern concepts of the structure of the universe, and the author of books whose primary aim is to convey complex scientific theories to any reader in accessible language. Kaku frequently appears on radio and television, and also takes part in many documentaries (for example, as host of the programs How the Universe Works and Sci Fi Science produced by the Discovery Channel). Some of them have been translated into many languages around the world. Kaku also gives lectures in New York.
