Carmen Martín Gaite
She was born in Salamanca. She studied philosophy at the University of Salamanca. After completing her studies, Gaite collaborated with publications such as Trabajos y Días and Revista Nueva. After moving to Madrid, the future writer became acquainted with many literary figures of the so-called Generation of the 50s (la Generación del 50), that is, the generation of the “children of the war.”
Although, according to Gaite herself, she had been writing since the age of 8, her first story (Un día de libertad) was published in 1953. Her first novel, El balneario (1955), brought her several awards and critical acclaim. Three years later, the writer’s most significant novel, Entre visillos, was published and was awarded the Nadal Prize.
In the 1960s, Gaite wrote a number of important works, among them La ataduras (1960) and Ritmo lento (1963). In the 1970s, collections of the writer’s essays, poems, and articles were published.
