Markus Zusak

Markus Zusak is a popular Australian writer of contemporary fiction and the author of six bestselling novels. He was born on June 23, 1975, in Sydney. Zusak graduated from Engadine High School and received his higher education at the University of Sydney. After graduating from university, he worked for some time at a school, where he taught English.

Since the publication of his first novel in 1999, Markus Zusak quickly became one of the youngest contemporary authors in Australia. Australian and American critics call him a “literary phenomenon” and regard him as one of the most inventive and poetic novelists of the new century.

Markus Zusak is the recipient of several literary awards for books for teenagers and young adults. Zusak’s books have been translated into more than 40 languages and have received critical acclaim. For several generations of readers, they have become cult favorites. Markus Zusak’s best-known novel, The Book Thief, was written in 2006, and in 2013 a film adaptation, Book Thief, was based on the book. In 2018, his monumental novel Bridge of Clay was published; Zusak had spent more than 10 years writing it.
