Mo Xiang Tong Xiu is a Chinese writer who became famous for fantasy novels in the danmei genre.

Mo Xiang Tong Xiu is a pen name. The author formed it from two Chinese expressions: 墨香 (Mo Xiang), which means “the aroma of ink,” and 铜臭 (Tong Xiu), which means “the smell of money,” and in some translations, “the smell of copper.”

The writer chose this name for a reason. In college, Tong Xiu wanted to study literature, while her mother insisted that she enroll in the economics faculty. According to Mo Xiang, her mother told her that this way she would be able to “smell ink in one hand and money in the other.” Thus, the pen name reflected the duality of the writer’s pursuits.

As a child, Tong Xiu did not like writing and dreamed of becoming a manga artist. Although she enjoyed reading various stories, for a long time she did not dare to create her own. It is believed that Tong Xiu’s interest in writing was awakened after reading fan fiction based on the anime D.Gray-man.

Mo Xiang Tong Xiu writes her novels in the danmei genre and publishes them on the online platform JJWXC (an equivalent of Ficbook). Danmei refers to stories for a female audience that depict romantic relationships between men.
