Patrik Ness

Patrik Ness

Patrick Ness is an English writer, journalist, and teacher.

He was born at Fort Belvoir military base, near Alexandria, Virginia, into the family of a drill sergeant. A few months later, however, his family moved to Hawaii, where Patrick spent the first six years of his life. He spent the next ten years in Washington State, and then moved to Los Angeles, where he studied English literature at the University of Southern California.

After his studies, Patrick worked as a technical writer for a telephone company.

In 1997, he published his first short story in Genre magazine, and in 1999, while working on his first novel, he moved to London. Patrick occasionally teaches creative writing in Oxford, writes critical articles, and works on his books. He has worked with such publications as The Daily Telegraph, The TLS, and The Sunday Telegraph, and occasionally writes reviews for The Guardian.

Two of Patrick’s novels for adults and the young adult series Chaos Walking Trilogy have been published, and in 2011 another of his young adult books, A Monster Calls, was released. To date, Patrick Ness continues to write, although his works are now not published in print, only as e-books.

Patrick Ness is currently one of the leading British authors, writing mainly young adult fiction. His novels are regularly nominated for prestigious fantasy and children’s literature awards. Ness’s most famous work is the novel A Monster Calls, based on an idea by the British writer Siobhan Dowd, who died in 2007. In October 2016, the world premiere of the film based on A Monster Calls will take place; the original screenplay for the film was written by Patrick Ness himself.
