Sara Dzh. Maas
Sarah J. Maas is an American writer.
She was born in 1986 in New York City. Sarah spent her entire childhood on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where she often enjoyed visiting the local Museum of Natural History and the ancient Nubian Temple of Dendur; in the evenings, her parents took her to the Metropolitan Opera, instilling in her a love of opera and ballet.
In middle school, Sarah was known as a “storyteller of tall tales” and began writing her first novel at the age of 16. It was essentially a reimagining of the fairy tale “Cinderella.” What if Cinderella were an assassin and came to the ball not to dance with the prince, but to kill him? Later, these girlish fantasies were reflected in the epic fantasy Throne of Glass. In April 2002, Sarah began posting draft entries from her future novel, then titled Queen of Glass, on a website for aspiring authors. After receiving a number of positive responses, she regularly uploaded more and more chapters of her fantasy online. Six years later, Throne of Glass became the most-read book in the site’s history, with thousands of readers from around the world leaving comments on it. It was thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of internet readers that Sarah began trying to find a publisher for her novel, and on August 7, 2012, the book was finally published.
All this time, while the book was waiting for its moment, Sarah did not abandon her literary pursuits and wrote several other books: the adult fantasy Catwoman: Soulstealer and the unconventional fairy-tale retellings A Court of Thorns and Roses, East, and Tam Lin. Sarah met her future husband on her very first day at Hamilton College, which she graduated from with honors, by the way. They married in May 2010, having moved to California two years earlier. In June 2018, Sarah and her husband had a son, Taran.
