Biography
Sarah Jio was born in the United States, on Bainbridge Island, Washington, on February 18, 1978. At school, Sarah loved the humanities: she was especially good at English literature and languages. She had no doubt that her calling was to become a journalist. After receiving her secondary education, she enrolled at the prestigious University of Washington and left her hometown.
The ambitious young woman soon began publishing in magazines and gained recognition as a writer, but her debut novel, Violets in March, initially raised serious doubts among publishers. It took her five years to finally publish it. The book was an incredible success with readers and made it onto bestseller lists. The public also highly praised the writer’s subsequent works: The Last Camellia was named the most anticipated book of 2012.
After the triumphant start of her writing career, she did not give up journalism. Today the writer runs a blog about healthy living, and her articles regularly appear in The New York Times, Marie Claire, and other prestigious publications. She is sometimes compared to Carrie Bradshaw, the popular heroine of Sex and the City, who turned her personal experiences with men into entertaining stories for her own column. Sarah Jio is interested in the twists and turns of human destinies and family secrets that have fallen into semi-forgotten obscurity. In this regard, her affinity with the tradition of classical women’s prose in the spirit of Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, and Daphne du Maurier is evident. For her astonishing candor and subtle psychological insight, she is called a master of contemporary sentimental literature.
Her eighth novel was published several years ago, and work is currently underway on the ninth. In 2015, she visited Moscow and Saint Petersburg to meet with devoted fans; she was enchanted by Russian nature and the hospitality of our compatriots. Who knows, perhaps this will be reflected in her work.
