Stephen Chbosky is an American director, writer, and screenwriter.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the Pittsburgh suburb of St. Clair. His mother, Lea, is a tax assessor, and his father, Fred G. Chbosky, is a CFO consultant. The family has Polish, Slovak, Irish, and Scottish roots. Stephen has a sister, Stacy. He was raised Catholic.
As a teenager, he read “a good mix of classics, horror, and fantasy.” He was strongly influenced by J. D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye and by the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Tennessee Williams. He graduated from St. Clair High School in 1988, where he met Stewart Stern. Stern became “a good friend and mentor” to him and had a significant impact on Chbosky’s career.
In 1992, Chbosky graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in screenwriting, and in the late 1990s wrote several screenplays.
His first novel was published in 1999 and immediately became popular among teenage readers. By 2000, the novel had become a bestseller. In 2007, The New York Times noted that “more than 700,000 copies have already been sold, and the book is passed from teenager to teenager like hot potato.”
