Stiven Erikson

Steven Erikson is the pseudonym of Steve Rune Lundin, a Canadian science fiction writer with training in archaeology and anthropology.

He was born in Toronto, Canada, on October 7, 1959, and grew up in Winnipeg. His first profession was archaeology; in 1980 he earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology, history, and classics (Anthropology, History, Classics) from the University of Manitoba, but in 1983 he abandoned work on a master's thesis in anthropology, choosing instead to become a writer. Steve approached his new profession seriously, first earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (1988, BFA, University of Victoria, Creative Writing, Film Studies), and then a master's degree from the Iowa Writers' Workshop (University of Iowa, 1990). His first works, written under his real name, soon followed; unsurprisingly, he chose the genre of historical fiction. Steve Lundin's first book was the collection of novellas A Ruin of Feathers (1991); the novella Stolen Voices (1993) won the Anvil Press Three-Day Novel Contest. This was followed by the collection Revolvo & Other Canadian Tales (1998) and the novella This River Awakens (1998).

In 1999 Steven decided to try his hand at fantasy; the first step was the creation, together with Ian Cameron Esslemont, of a new world — Malazan. At first it was merely a setting for a role-playing game, but its ideas, characters, and events quickly grew into a literary world, with descriptions and plot. Under the pseudonym Steven Erikson, the writer created the first book in the epic saga of the Malazan Empire, Malazan Book of the Fallen. Gardens of the Moon (1999) brought him worldwide recognition and was shortlisted for the World Fantasy Award in 2000. In 2011 the final, tenth book in the series, The Crippled God, was published, but the author plans to return to the beloved world of Malazan with new books and new characters.

In addition to working on the main cycle, Steven sometimes turns to writing standalone novellas, both
