Yuriy Shchekochikhin
Yury Petrovich Shchekochikhin was a Russian journalist and writer, the author and host of television programs and high-profile journalistic investigations. He wrote plays that were widely staged, and a feature film was made based on his screenplay. He was a deputy of the last Supreme Soviet of the USSR and later twice a deputy of the State Duma from the Yabloko party.
Yury Shchekochikhin graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University in 1975. He began his journalism career at the age of 17 with a publication in Moskovsky Komsomolets. From 1972 to 1980, he edited the “Scarlet Sails” column in Komsomolskaya Pravda, where he dealt with teenage issues. From 1980 to 1996, he was editor of the investigations department at Literaturnaya Gazeta. Since 1996, he served as deputy editor-in-chief and editor of the investigations department at Novaya Gazeta. His publications addressed such topics as the state of the Russian army, the release of prisoners and hostages in Chechnya, corruption in government bodies, and social problems.
