In the spring of 1863, German scientist Otto Lidenbrock, a professor of mineralogy in Hamburg, discovered a manuscript containing runic inscriptions in an ancient Icelandic book. After deciphering them, he and his nephew Axel discovered an incredible secret. According to the manuscript's author, 16th-century alchemist Arne Saknussemm, the globe is hollow, and at its center lies a mysterious, unknown world, accessible through the crater of the extinct Icelandic volcano Snæfell. Lidenbrock and Axel set off into the depths of the earth, unaware of the incredible discoveries, surprising encounters, and deadly trials that await them there... 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' (1864) by Jules Verne is the author's original variation on the 'lost world' theme, which has become a classic of adventure literature and was adapted into five films between 1910 and 2008.
