Here's Stanley!
You might have considered yourself a brave child if, after watching 'The Shining,' you weren't afraid of bathrooms. Especially green ones.
It's funny that 'The Shining' is the Kubrick film we watched as children. It was often shown on TV, and we were apparently attracted to the figure of a boy riding a bicycle through the corridors of an empty hotel.
Back then, we didn't know who directed this film and that this someone was a very important figure in the world of cinema, to whom, twenty years later, we, still remembering that very scene from the bathroom, will dedicate a separate issue. And we will hang a portrait of Jack Torrance inside the office closet. Don't ask.
In this issue, we talk about all of the director's films, from 'Fear and Desire' to 'Eyes Wide Shut.' We felt it was most interesting to look at Kubrick's work through the lens of American cinema history—that way, one can appreciate his genius and unconventionality. Therefore, we decided to begin each article about a film with historical background and describe what was happening in the film industry at the time Kubrick began filming a particular project.
