Copenhagen, mid-1920s. Artists Greta and Einar Wegener have been married for six years. Greta paints portraits of celebrities, and Einar creates miniature landscapes. One day, Greta asks her husband to pose for a portrait of an opera singer and gives him a pair of women's shoes. This is the beginning of the story of Lili Elbe, one of the first transgender women to transition.
