The novel 'Drinking the Wind' combines elements of different genres. It is simultaneously a family drama, a western, and a noir. As in an avant-garde film, characters flash before us: a despotic father and a fanatically religious mother; the head of the town, the tyrant and paranoiac Joyce; his henchmen — the dwarf Snake and the giant Double, as well as whale hunters, World War I veterans, pirates, poachers, and girls of far from exemplary behavior.
But above all, this is a parable about the all-conquering love that binds three brothers and a sister: the defiant and sensual Mabel, the literature-obsessed Mark, Mathieu who understands the language of trees and animals, and the youngest, Luc, who imagines himself as Jim Hawkins from Stevenson's 'Treasure Island.'
