Jamie Goldberg is a volunteer at the campaign headquarters of a local Senate candidate. He loves his job, but tries to stay behind the scenes. Talking to strangers is a huge challenge for him, and going door-to-door canvassing for his candidate is a nightmare. But then he meets Maya...
Maya Riemann is having the worst summer of her life. Her best friend went off to college, her trip to Italy fell through, her parents are getting divorced, and now, at her mother's insistence, she'll have to campaign in the local elections with some awkward kid. Of course, spending the entire summer break convincing neighbors to vote isn't the most enjoyable experience, but the closer the vote gets, the more tense the atmosphere at the campaign headquarters becomes, and the more strained Jamie and Maya's relationship becomes.
