A Women's History of the Beatles (Zhenskaya Istoriya Bitlz)

In the early 1960s, the rock band The Beatles gained immense popularity in Europe and America. This period was also marked by another important social trend—the rise of second-wave feminism. These two global cultural phenomena directly influenced each other: the music of the Liverpool Four inspired self-determination among women of their generation, while the Beatles' biographies and creative output always featured a significant female presence. In her book, Christina Feldman-Barrett analyzes the personal and indirect (through music, television, and other media) relationships that women of different generations developed with the band. The author gives voice to the band's female fans—from the Merseyside girls who tried to get to a Beatles concert in the 1960s to women today—and also explores the stories of the wives, mothers, and other women who surrounded the musicians. Thus, the researcher proposes reconsidering the traditional approach to the historiography of the Beatles and situating this cultural phenomenon within a broader socio-historical context related to women's emancipation. Christina Feldman-Barrett, PhD, teaches at Griffith University, Australia.
