In the spring of 2022, the first edition of the works “Chauvin” and “Vidavnitstvo” will release a graphic version of one of the most resonant works of the American historian Timothy Snyder “About Tyranny. Twenty lessons from the twentieth century.' It was introduced to the knowledge of the Ukrainian reader by the German-American author and illustrator Nora Krug. The text version of this book was already published in Ukrainian in 2018 in the translation by Olesya Kamishnikova from the publication “Medusa” and at the same time to the library rarity.
For the graphic version, Olesya finalized her translation, so it was important for us to preserve the aphoristic nature of the Ukrainian version.
In a short hour, “About Tyranny” became one of the most important books of the remaining rocks about lessons Stories that everyone needs to know. This is a relevant and laconic excursion from the twentieth century, the darkest moments of which illustrate the lessons of resisting modern authoritarianism in a flexible and accessible form. Timothy Snyder pays tribute to the world's trend toward democracy and writes about the public opinion of current historical processes, creating an intellectual guide for a wide range of people. readers.
In addition to other edits, in the updated illustrated graphic version, Snyder included allusions to the ongoing pandemic. The stories “About Tyranny” are now presented in Nori’s special, recognizable style, already familiar to Ukrainian readers from the novel “Vitchizna. Album of the German Motherland” - which is now a graphic memoir, a collage appliqué, an excursion into history and a treasure trove of special insights. Snyder's words bring new life, color and strength; aphoristic thoughts reflect visually and call to action.
“If we remember what is truly important, we visualize it. In the graphic book “On Tyranny,” Nora Krug visualized the most important lessons of the twentieth century, knowing what will benefit all citizens who shape the future” - Shepard Fairy
And this is how the graphic version was created.
