Chuck Palahniuk

Chuck Palahniuk is a contemporary American writer and independent journalist. He is best known as the author of Fight Club, which was later adapted into a film by David Fincher. His works, stylistically similar to those of writers such as Bret Easton Ellis, Irvine Welsh, and Douglas Coupland, made him one of the most popular novelists of Generation X.

Chuck Palahniuk is the son of Carol and Fred Palahniuk. He grew up in a house trailer in Burbank, Washington. When he was 14, his parents divorced and often left Chuck and his siblings at his grandparents’ ranch in eastern Washington.

In 1986, Palahniuk graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in journalism, where he also interned at a radio station. Soon afterward, he moved to Portland. Chuck Palahniuk wrote for local newspapers for some time and later began working as a mechanic at Freightliner. At the same time, Palahniuk also wrote truck repair manuals and did some journalistic work, something he would return to after his career took off. In addition to his main job, he volunteered at shelters for the homeless and later in hospices, where he transported terminally ill people to support group meetings. He later stopped doing this after the death of a patient with whom Palahniuk had become especially close.

In adulthood, Chuck became a member of the rebellious Cacophony Society. He is a regular participant in their events, including the annual Santa Rampage (a public Christmas party involving a great deal of alcohol, fun, and pranks) in Portland. Membership in the Cacophony Society inspired Palahniuk to describe certain events, both real and fictional, in his novels (in particular, Project Mayhem in Fight Club).

Palahniuk began writing when he was about 34 or 35 years old. According to his own account, he started writing after attending writers’ workshops, which he went to in order to make new friends. The courses were led by Tom Spanbauer, who later influenced Palahniuk’s minimalist style. His first book was Insomnia: If You Lived Here, You’d Be Home Already, which he never published because he became dissatisfied
