French Tana

Tana French is an Irish writer and stage actress.

Tana was born on May 10, 1973, in Burlington, Vermont, USA. Her father was an economic adviser who worked in different countries, so the family traveled a great deal. The years she spent living in Ireland, Italy, and Malawi left the strongest impression on her. From each country where Tana lived, she drew inspiration and studied local traditions and cultural traits. All of this later played a role in her development as a writer and found reflection on the pages of her novels.

Distinguished from other children by her life experience and determination, the young Tana was passionate about what she did. From an early age, the girl took part in various school productions, read her own poems to her family, and dreamed of a great writing career. French’s parents saw great potential in their daughter and did everything they could to support the development of her acting skills.

French studied acting at Trinity College Dublin. Irish culture impressed French so deeply that she decided to make an extraordinary choice and remained in the country, retaining dual citizenship of Italy and the United States.

While studying professional acting, she completely forgot about literary fame and immersed herself in the world of theater and film. Many instructors found the young talent extremely gifted and predicted that she would achieve worldwide fame. Tana’s development as a public figure began with small roles in theater and later expanded into film acting and voice work.

Years passed, and the world changed, as did French’s outlook. After turning forty, the actress remembered her childhood dream of becoming a great writer. Since she loved crime and detective dramas, the genre of her own books was based on exactly these criteria.

She began writing her debut novel in between auditions, and it was this work that absorbed all the energy and uniqueness of the author. The first novel, titled In the Woods, was published in 2007. The work received wide international acclaim and many enthusiastic reviews.

The rights to adapt the book into a television series were also acquired, and in 2014 a popular magazine included In the Woods in its top 50 best debut novels from 1950 to 2014. Tana French, whose books are imbued with detective investigations and mystical events, is called
