Hugh Howey is an American science fiction writer.
Hugh Howey tried to write his first novel while still in school. After graduating, he enrolled in college and moved to Charleston. In an effort to save money, he bought a boat, on which he lived and once nearly died with a friend while heading to Baltimore. After dropping out of college, as he put it, "out of fear of reality," he spent some time traveling, surviving two hurricanes on his boat. He then returned to America and began a career as a yacht captain.
On one of his voyages, he met his wife, after which he bought a house and gave up sea travel. But he did not lose his love for it—and continued to travel, though this time in his imagination. Some of those journeys were so good that Hugh wanted to share them with the world. His first works tell the story of Molly Fyde. Howey based her character on women he knew.
The "Wool" series suddenly became a bestseller in the fall of 2011 and entered Amazon's top 100 books. The film rights were purchased by Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian. A hardcover edition is planned for publication in 2013.
At present, Hugh Howey lives in Florida with his wife Amber and their dog Bella.
