Michael Bond was an English writer and the author of the widely known series of books about Paddington Bear; he was awarded the Order of the British Empire. He was born in Newbury, Berkshire, a small town in Southeast England, on 13 January 1926. He studied in Reading at the Catholic school Presentation College. During the Second World War, he served in the Royal Air Force and in the Middlesex Regiment of the British Army. Bond began writing in 1945 and sold his first story to the magazine London Opinion. In 1958, after having written a large number of plays and stories and while working as a television operator at the BBC, Michael Bond published his first Paddington story, "A Bear Called Paddington." By 1965, the writer had already published an entire series of stories about the restless little bear and decided to leave his job at the BBC and become a full-time writer. In addition to the Paddington books, Michael Bond also wrote a series of stories about a guinea pig named Olga da Polga and detective stories about the sleuth Monsieur Pamplemousse. In total, the author wrote more than one hundred and fifty books. He died at his home on 27 June 2017 at the age of 91 after a short illness.
