Mikhail Davydov

Mikhail Abramovich Davydov (born 1954) is a Soviet and Russian historian, a specialist in the economic history of Russia. Doctor of Historical Sciences (2004), professor at the School of Historical Sciences of the Higher School of Economics. From 1973 to 1975, he served as a senior air gunner-radio operator on the Tu-16 (military unit 30185 and military unit 74386), and from 1976 to 1978 as a second-class flight radio operator-test pilot at the Vzlyot Research and Production Association. In 1981, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of History of Lomonosov Moscow State University. In 1986, he defended his candidate dissertation, “Monopoly and Competition in the Sugar Industry of Russia in the Early 20th Century.” In 2004, he defended his doctoral dissertation, “The Market and Market Relations of Russia in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries (A Source-Study).” From 1985 to 1987, he was a history teacher at Moscow Secondary School No. 274. From 1988 to 2011, he taught at the Russian State University for the Humanities, where he became a professor in 2005. From 2011 to 2015, he was a senior research fellow at the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2013, he was a visiting professor at Jilin University in China. Since 2012, he has been a professor at the School of Historical Sciences of the Higher School of Economics. His research interests include the political and military history of Russia in the late 18th to early 20th century (up to 1917), as well as the socio-economic history of post-reform Russia. He was the recipient of the 2017 Yegor Gaidar Prize in the category “For Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Historical Science in Russia” for his book Twenty Years Before the Great War. The Russian Modernization of Witte and Stolypin. He is a member of the international association “History and Computer.”
