Milena Michiko Flašar

Milena Michiko Flasar is an Austrian writer.

Milena was born in Sankt Pölten in 1980. Her mother is Japanese and her father is Austrian. After finishing school, she studied comparative literature, German, and Romance philology in Vienna and Berlin. She taught German as a foreign language.

After several successful publications in various literary journals, in 2018 she published her first book, the short story collection Ich bin (I Am). The collection included three short stories about love and separation. For her work, she received several prizes and grants.

In February 2012, her new book I Called Him Tie was published. In Germany alone, the novel sold more than 100,000 copies. A stage play was written based on it, and in 2013 the premiere of the production, directed by Jana Milena Polasek, took place at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin and received numerous awards.

In 2014, Norddeutscher Rundfunk also produced a radio play. Among other honors, the book was included on the longlist for the 2012 German Book Prize, received the Austrian Alpha Prize and the Euregio Student Literary Prize (which introduces German, Dutch, and Belgian school students aged 15–20 to contemporary literature from neighboring countries), and was translated into many languages.

The writer lives in Vienna, where, in addition to her creative work, she teaches German as a foreign language.

Flasar is married and raises a son with her husband.
