Petronius Arbiter (c. 14 – 66 AD) is the author of the ancient Roman novel Satyricon, usually identified with the senator Petronius, about whom Tacitus wrote. Petronius's Satyricon, one of the most original works of ancient literature of the first century of the Roman Empire, has come down to us in fragmentary form in medieval manuscripts. In its content, this work is a sharp adventure and satirical novel, consisting of many individual everyday scenes, in which the amusing adventures of three friends and the dirty stories that happened to them on the streets and squares of Ancient Rome are vividly and with great talent described. The novel widely depicts the everyday, 'base' life of the common people, ignorant and superstitious, with a limited outlook, coarse tastes, but not without practical savvy.
