ANDY WARHOL (English: Andy Warhol; real name — Andrei Varkhola, Slovak: Andrej Varchola, Rusyn: Андрій Варгола, English: Andrew Warhola; August 6, 1928 — February 22, 1987) was an American artist of Rusyn origin, producer, designer, writer, collector, magazine publisher, and film director, a cult figure in the history of the pop art movement and modern art as a whole. In the 1960s, he was the manager and producer of the first alternative rock group, Velvet Underground. Several feature and documentary films have been made about Warhol’s life.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, as the fourth child in a family of Rusyn immigrants from the village of Miková near Stropkov.

In the third grade, Warhol contracted chorea and, after recovering from scarlet fever, was confined to bed for much of the time. In class he became an outcast. He developed a fear of doctors and hospitals, which would never leave him until his death. During the periods when he was bedridden, he began to take an interest in drawing and made collages from newspaper clippings.

When Andy was 13, his father died in a mining accident.

After graduating in 1949 from the art department of Carnegie Institute of Technology, he moved to New York, where he worked as an artist-illustrator for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and other less popular publications. In addition, he designed shop windows and posters.

By 1950, success came after the successful design of an advertisement for a shoe company.

In 1956, he received the honorary prize of the Art Directors Club.

In 1962, Andy created the paintings Green Coca-Cola Bottles and Campbell's Soup Cans.

From this period on, Warhol collaborated as a photographer and artist with film stars: Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Elvis Presley.

He began making films, but as a director he achieved success only in narrow circles. Most of the films he made during that period had no plot. Their story lines were based on pseudo-documentary footage, for example: “
