Johnny the Ant is the strangest inhabitant of the entire anthill. He's too weak—no match for the other strong ants, too fat—he even has to sleep outside, and too trusting—he constantly gets into trouble with the other ants, who dislike him for his differences. Overall, Johnny's life is anything but a bed of roses, though he does have one true friend—the ant Lapushka, who dislikes working, unlike her sisters. But one spring, something truly strange happened to Johnny the Ant: he felt sharp vibrations in his plump body. What was going on? He must be sick! The ant-paramedic (and was it really her, and not some mean sister? After all, Johnny's eyesight is so bad) confirmed his fears: he must leave the anthill immediately, otherwise they will all perish!
Johnny rushes away, and faithful Lapushka, despite his terrible illness, decides to follow him: after all, how will her best friend cope alone in the wild forest?
On this journey, discoveries and dangers await them, and one night Johnny meets a beautiful beetle, who was rolling a delicious, fragrant, perfect... ball of dung across the clearing! And now he is no longer able to contain the vibration in his gut, he gives it free rein, the valves on his back open, and real wings appear from them! Yes, Johnny wasn't an ant at all.
This new skill helps Johnny not only understand who he is, but also save Sweetie from a voracious bird, and prove to all his former anthill brethren: he's not a flawed ant at all, but a wonderful dung beetle!
