'Love Thy Neighbor' (1939) is a novel about German emigrants forced to wander pre-war Europe. They hide, starve, and secretly cross borders; many of their loved ones are in concentration camps. Having lost their homeland and their familiar way of life, and facing mortal danger, Remarque's heroes still find the strength for compassion and love.
The novel was first published in 1941, immediately after its film adaptation.
