Returning from a year-long journey through Europe, Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin founded the Moscow Journal, in which, beginning with the first issue and for two years in 1791–1792, he published, among other things, 'Letters of a Russian Traveler'—his epistolary work, exquisite in form and monumental in concept, destined to become one of the most significant phenomena of Russian literary sentimentalism. The history of 'Letters...' continued even after the end of the Moscow Journal: Karamzin continued to work on it in subsequent years. The first complete edition of 'Letters...', due to the censors' close attention to the fragments devoted to the French Revolution, became possible after the death of Paul I in 1801... Over time, in addition to the undeniable literary merits of 'Letters...', the unique historical value of Karamzin's image of Europe, as seen through the eyes of a traveler from Russia, as well as the image of this enlightened Russian traveler of the eighteenth century, reflected in it, has become increasingly clear.
