The Gambler (Igrok)

The novel 'The Gambler' occupies a special place in Fyodor Dostoevsky's work—it contains exceptionally strong autobiographical motifs: the writer's long-standing passion for roulette and his complex, tormented relationship with A.P. Suslova. The idea for 'The Gambler' arose as early as 1863. In the autumn of 1865, experiencing financial difficulties, Dostoevsky dictated the novel's text to his stenographer, A.G. Snitkina (who later became his wife), in just 26 days. According to her recollections, when discussing the fates of the characters during the work on the novel, 'Fyodor Mikhailovich was entirely on the side of the 'gambler,' saying that he had personally experienced many of its feelings and impressions. He asserted that one could possess a strong character, prove it in one's life, and yet still lack the strength to overcome one's passion for roulette.'
