These notes were repeatedly lost under the rubble of destroyed drafts, but with enviable persistence they returned to life, haunting the author in dreams and waking life, and most often—at the swampy crossroads between slumber and wakefulness. In the end, the book conquered the author's inability to write it. And now it exists.
