C. D. C. Reeve is an American philosopher and translator of Plato and Aristotle. In addition to classical philosophy, Reeve explores the philosophy of sex and love, which is the focus of this book. Reeve explores a wide range of themes and issues—sexual violence, sadomasochism, perversion, pornography—showing how our understanding of love is born at their intersection.
Reeve's analysis is supported not only by references to the work of sexologists and queer theorists but also by unexpected illustrations from classic works such as Turgenev's Fathers and Sons and Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Reeve is particularly interested in the irreversible evolution towards greater gender fluidity and plasticity in our sexual experience.
'The Chaos of Love' is a collection of ten essays in which the author combines a deep knowledge of ancient texts (Homer's Iliad, Plato's 'Symposium,' and so on) with Freudian psychoanalysis, Lacan's concepts, and Anthony Giddens's sociology of intimate life, forcing us to think about how we define our corporeality and think about our past and future partners.
