First published in 1984, Frank Whitford's (b. 1941) book remains one of the best overviews of the history and achievements of the Bauhaus, the school of architecture and design founded in the Weimar Republic in 1919, closed by the Nazis fourteen years later, but which, in less than a decade and a half of its existence, laid the foundations for the teaching of art and design for the next century.
