This book is dedicated to the Parisian period of the Russian artist L. S. Bakst, who spent a quarter of his life in the French capital and created most of the works that brought him worldwide fame. A ballet designer for S. P. Diaghilev's famous 'Russian Seasons,' Bakst is presented for the first time in the book as a set designer for other private musical enterprises—for Anna Pavlova, Ida Rubinstein, and Maria Kuznetsova—as well as as a decorator for the Grand Opera, the main musical theater in Paris. Drawing on previously unpublished documents, the artist is shown as a trendsetter in the decorative arts—in fashion, textile design, and interior design. The book covers the artist's final period, marked by the creation of a series of monumental canvases for the Rothschild family mansion.
